Rescued by the French Underground after being gravely wounded when shot

down over Frankfurt, Germany in March 1944, a young American patriot literally

crawls and climbs his way across the European battlefields, risking his life to

send strategic target Information to Britain. Heroism and survival instincts work

together to show how the stark horror of World War II as experienced by a 20 year

old U.S. Army Air Force Sergeant can be ennobled by the unconditional charity and

bravery of men and women fighting to be free in occupied France.
Over sixty years has not diminished the graphic nightmare of human

mutilation in war games that seem primitive in our electronic age. The sense of

history and the will to win freedom shine in this personal recollection of

individuals on both sides of the conflict. This story reminds us that real people

alive today battled for their right to live and for ours.

Code Burgundy The Long Escape eBook John Katsaros Christian Miller Reviews

Recently, I met the author at an airfield and was immediately taken by his story and his vitality. After reading Code Burgundy spellbound, I purchased several more copies as gifts for my siblings. It is a rare find. Like many boomers, I am the child of a World War II veteran raised in an extended family of veterans who rarely spoke about the heroism of their generation. John's compelling voice showcases his courage with a nonchalence so typical of his peers while honoring the heroics of the French citizens who orchestrated his escape from occupied France. After all the books, movies, and documentaries created about the War, I assumed there was little new to learn. How wrong I was - buy this book while you can. And let's hope Hollywood makes the movie soon.
On March 20, 1944, Man O' War, an Eighth Air Force B-17, died. Shot down by German fighters, she shed parts and people over the French landscape. John Katsaros, the starboard waist gunner, fell 25,000 feet and got his chute open just in time to smash his left ankle and break six ribs. Over the next three months, with the help of the Free French Resistance, he was twice captured by, and escaped from, the Gestapo -- the only flier ever to do so. During those three months, he did his own share of Resistance work.

John relates his harrowing tale in Code Burgundy The Long Escape. John is a great storyteller his voice is clear, strong, and compelling. His book is a spellbinding read, from the hand of a man who, like so many others of his generation, was "just doing his job." Ask John, and he'll tell you he's not a hero. After reading Code Burgundy, you'll know better. And you will have learned a great deal about things that aren't in the other World War II books John was bound under oath of secrecy not to reveal his adventures until the veil was lifted 50 years after the war ended.

"Man O' War's Last Mission" comes vividly to life in a wonderful painting by the hand of renowned aviation artist Robert Brun, who is a personal friend of John Katsaros. I have the book and a print of the painting. You can get the book here at , and you can see Robert's fabulous art at Robert's own site. (Google his name.) Either alone is well worth having, but together they convey an incredible sense of power and determination the indomitable American will at its very best.

Code Burgundy should be required reading for every American over the age of 16.
Purchased this book from the author at a WW 2 reenactment. Now that I know his war experience, I hope to shake his hand again. The hand he almost lost to enemy fire, but was saved by a French doctor in the resistance. The first half of the book is the author's story, followed by the story as told by one of his fellow escapees. The last part of the book relates Katasaros' return visit to France and the French resistance who treated his wounds, provided food and shelter, and helped him and many others back to freedom.

The book is lightly edited leaving the reader with the impression that one is listening to a vet share his past. The personal, unpolished tone and style combine with numerous photos and scanned documents to draw the reader into Katasaros' trials and travels. This is truly a positive story of honor and courage exhibited by many people who share a common bond of love and respect--the French for Katasaros and the other Allied airmen who sacrificed life and limb, and Katasaros for the French resistance fighters who risked their lives to rescue him and other downed airmen.

Having been captured twice by the Gestapo and, as a fugitive, fled across France, the author declares "Cherish your freedom".
John Katsaros has written his suspenseful true WWII autobiography as a air crewman in the 8th Air Force flying missions to Europe as a gunner on a B-17.
One day his B-17 with crew on a routine mission was shot down over France. John and a few of his crew survive the "Bail Out" (Parachuting from their battle damaged B-17 Flying Fortress). Johns parachute opened only to be injured on landing and captured by local German NAZI forces in FranceCode Burgundy The Long Escape. His story tells of how he made his escape from NAZI occupied france and how the French Resistance was able to help in his plight to escape France. He was recently honored by the French president Nicholas Sarkozy and is also the President of the Escape and Evasion Society. He gives radio interviews and does book signings please contact him through his association. Anyone who has ever been an air crewman or is a US Army Air Corps history buff of WWII or a POW should read this book! This is not to be missed! Get it autographed while you still can. Why this isn't a movie already I don't know?
One of the best WW2 books that I have read. Great story of survival and French underground.
Fantastic book. Worth the read. It certainly made me feel better about the French.
A stunning awesome read. Reads like a Tom Clancy novel. Except it really happened!
A story that was untold for security reasons, is yet another tale that is truly amazing. A great read for anyone interesting in individual activity of World War II. The author did many heroic things, along with the French resistance.
